Unidentified armed men shot dead a tribal chieftain and his wife in Zabul province south of Afghanistan on Wednesday and made their good escape, spokesman for provincial administration Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar said.

"Unknown armed men entered the house of Atta Khan Kajran and shot him dead along with his wife inside his house in Shah Joi district in the wee hours of today, Rasoulyar told Xinhua.

The late Kajran also served as the head of tribes in the district, he added.

However, he said that the culprits had made their good escape.

Meantime, he blamed anti-government militants for the attack but the Taliban outfit that often targets pro-government figures and interests has not made comment yet.

This is the second deadly attack on pro-government tribal elders in south Afghanistan over the past two days.

In the first attack on Tuesday, an explosion claimed the life of tribal chieftain Hajji Zukria in Spin Boldak district in the neighboring Kandahar province.
