Indonesia commemorates Independence Day

Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono presided over a grand ceremony to celebrate the country's 65th Independence Day Tuesday at the presidential palace attended by dignitaries and patron figures from across the country.

The ceremony was commenced with 17 times of loud canon firing at 10.00 a.m. to recall the independence statement read out by Indonesia's patron figure, Soekarno, at exactly the same time on Aug. 17, 65 years ago. The independence statement was read out by head of Regional Representatives Council (DPD) at the parliament Irman Gusman soon after the canon firing.

The focus of the ceremony was the flag hoisting session. In orchestrated movements, they hoisted the flag up to the end of the pole at the same time with the conclusion of national anthem sung by a choir group nearby.

The group is joined by selected high school students from across the country. They undertook drills in camps before taking part in the honorable task in the ceremony.

Each of their movements was watched by thousands of viewers consisting of senior officials, families of national heroes, patron figures, foreign diplomatic staff and senior officers from the police and military.

Wiyano was among the guests invited to attend the ceremony, he and his wife were allocated to sit in seats for patron figures.

He said that Indonesia now has come to a better condition with massive progress in the economic and democracy sectors.
