Former Australia's Hawthorn Football Club president Ian Dicker on Friday has been appointed the new chair Victoria's Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority.

He will replace Christine Nixon, who quit the post following criticism of her actions while she was police chief commissioner on Black Saturday.

Dicker, a businessman and philanthropist, was Hawthorn president from 1997 to 2005.

He will start his new job on Monday and told a media conference on Friday morning that he was "excited by the task".

Dicker will also donate his entire 200,000 dollars (179,520 U.S. dollars) salary to charity, a decision Australia's state Victorian Premier John Brumby has praised.

"He's a person who's been successful in business; he's made that decision and it's a very generous contribution already that he's made," Brumby told ABC Network on Friday.

The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of bushfires that ignited or were burning across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday 7 February 2009 during extreme bushfire- weather conditions, resulting in Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire.

173 people died as a result of the fires and 414 were injured.
