Security forces detained five suspected Taliban insurgents in Chardara district of Kunduz province in north Afghanistan, an official said Thursday.

"NATO-led troops detained five persons on charge of having link with Taliban militants in Chardara district Wednesday night," district governor Abdul Wahid Omarkhil told Xinhua.

Chardara has been regarded as the stronghold of Taliban fighters in Kunduz and the neighboring provinces of Baghlan and Takhar provinces.

Meanwhile, Taliban insurgents gunned down a cleric Mawlawi Akbar in Imam Sahib district, a neighbor to Chardara district, on the same Wednesday night, Mohammad Ayub Haqyar, the governor of Imam Sahib confirmed to Xinhua.

Mawlawi Akbar was killed inside a mosque, and two others were injured in the incident.

A relatively peaceful province until last year, Kunduz has been experiencing increasing Taliban-linked activities since beginning this year.
