Indonesia claims to have blocked 90 pct of websites with porn contents

Complying with its pledge to block porn websites issued a month ago, Indonesia's Communications and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring has claimed to have blocked 90 percent of such websites from being accessed by internet users.

The blockade of about 4 million porn websites was enforced with close coordination between the ministry and around 200 internet service providers (ISP) in the country.

"We hope to reach 100 percent blockade," the minister said recently.

The government would slap sanctions against those proved of porn distribution through any means, including the internet, the minister said.

The sanctions may vary from fines to imprisonment with maximum term of 12 years.

Onno W. Purbo, internet expert, appreciated the move to blockade the porn websites, reminding the government on BlackBerry service which is untouchable from the policy to block porn websites. He said that Indonesian BlackBerry users have free access to porn through their handset as its server is located in Canada.
