Thai leading opposition to push for General Chavalit as next PM: spokesman

Thailand's leading opposition Pheu Thai Party (PTP) will, at the upcoming poll, campaign for its party chairman General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh as the next prime minister, party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said on Wednesday, according to a report of the Nation.

Prompong said Chavalit paid a visit on Tuesday to his Nakhon Phanom constituents, pledging to contest the race for the position of the prime minister in a second term.

General Chavalit served briefly in 1997 prior to resigning to take responsibility for the 1997 financial crisis.

The financial crisis broke out in 1997 in Thailand and spilled over to other countries in the region.
