Prompong said Chavalit paid a visit on Tuesday to his Nakhon Phanom constituents, pledging to contest the race for the position of the prime minister in a second term.
General Chavalit served briefly in 1997 prior to resigning to take responsibility for the 1997 financial crisis.
The financial crisis broke out in 1997 in Thailand and spilled over to other countries in the region.
