The South Korean government is set to hold a task force meeting later in the day to discuss U.S. sanctions against Iran and their possible ramifications on South Korean businesses, local media reported Friday.
The meeting, to be attended by officials from ministries and government institutions concerned, is the first of its kind to come after the United States asked for Seoul's cooperation on sanctioning the Middle Eastern country for its uranium enrichment program.
The move comes as the country's financial watchdog wraps up a regular examination on the Seoul branch of Bank Mellat, an Iranian bank Washington has blacklisted for being a channel of financial transactions related to Iranian nuclear programs.
The Financial Supervisory Service denied speculation that the examination is related to Washington's call for cooperation on the sanctions, saying it is regularly held every four years for foreign banks here. Enditem
