A Filipino soldier was killed and two others were wounded as they clashed on Thursday with leftist rebels in southern Philippines, a military official said Friday.

Regional military spokesman Randolph Cabangbang said soldiers were on foot patrol in the village of Dunganpikong, Matanao, Davao del Sur Province when they encountered undetermined number of New Peoples Army rebels led by Commander JamJam Thursday evening.

He said an hour-long gun battle ensued, leaving Corporal Cesar Bucol dead.

"We believed the rebels suffer heavy casualties because of blood stains on the position of rebel group," Cabangbang said.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades.

Military estimates the NPA strength at more than 4,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.
