A local council official was tied to a tree as punishment on the order of a government minister due to the official's non-participation at a community campaign to eradicate the dengue fever epidemic.

Officials at the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha or the local council in the north Colombo suburb said Deputy Minister of Highways Mervyn Silva who is the local parliamentarian ordered the use of a rope to tie the official to a mango tree in the council premises in the presence of reporters.

The official was untied a few minutes later.

The minister's action followed a warning by him over the weekend to errant officials who he claimed was responsible for the spread of dengue fever, the mosquito based illness.

The dengue epidemic caused death of over 170 people while another 20,000 have been admitted to hospitals in Sri Lanka so far this year.

The government launched a national dengue eradication program this month.
