Chest-deep water was seen in parts of Maguindanao province in southern Philippines as a result of a river breach triggered by heavy rain last night, the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Saturday morning.

As of 7 a.m. Saturday, flood water remained chest deep in Bulalo, Banubo, Catuli, Calsada, Limbo and Salimbao villages in Maguindanao province, NDCC said in a statement.

The rains since 10 p.m. Thursday caused the Simuay River to overflow. Residents of these villages have evacuated temporarily to the higher portion of national highways, it said.

"The Quirino Bridge connecting Sultan Kudarat town to Cotabato City was filled up with all types of vehicles and caused heavy traffic congestion at 300 km portion of national highway in Brgy Salimbao. A portion of the highway was impassable to light vehicles," it said.

The local disaster control department is closely monitoring the situation and preparing for mass evacuation of the affected residents if the situation worsens.

Emergency response units of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Maguindanao and Cotabato City were placed on standby to assist if needed, NDCC said.
