Afghan police secured the safe release of three Bangladeshi nationals following an operation against abductors in northern Samangan province, spokesman for provincial administration Mohammad Sedeq Azizi said Sunday.

"The operation with the involvement of police and army and backed by NATO-led troops launched Saturday morning and after several hours of search and fighting the troops rescued the three Bangladeshis from Daraisuf Payan district late Saturday evening," Azizi told reporters.

He also stressed that all the trio are safe and sound. Unknown armed men on Thursday kidnapped three Bangladeshis and two Afghans -- the employees of a South Korean construction company involved in rebuilding activities in the northern Samangan province.

However, Azizi noted that three abductors were killed and seven others sustained injuries during the operation.

One policeman was killed and another injured during the firefight, he further said.

He did not say if the abductors were Taliban militants, saying they were "the enemies of Afghanistan."
