Indonesia, U.S. seeks for comprehensive partnership on defense

Indonesia and the United States have prepared for establishing comprehensive partnership on defense, Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said here Thursday.

The Minister made the statement after meeting with the United States Defense Secretary Roberts M. Gates at his office here.

Purnomo said that among the cooperation would be set up and boosted were cooperation on defense industry, intelligence and military education.

The plan would be discussed during the upcoming visit of President Barack Obama scheduled in November, Purnomo was quoted by detik online as saying.

The United States reaffirmed its praise on Indonesia's success on cracking down terrorism.

Meanwhile, Gates said on Thursday that the United States Military will resume relation with Indonesian army special force known as Kopassus after 12 years of ban due to allegedly poor human rights record.

The secretary said that the decision was made after evaluating the Indonesian military reform over the past decade, ongoing professionalism of the Indonesian Armed Forces or TNI and the recent action taken by the Indonesian Ministry of Defense to address human rights issues.
