General election possible to be held soon if no violence: Thai PM

A general election may come before time if all concerned sections cooperate to make sure that there is no more violence, Thailand's Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday, according to the Bangkok Post's website.

Asked if he still thought it was unnecessary for his government to complete its remaining time late next year, Abhisit said that this has remained as his intention.

He said an election should be called if it could help push the country forward, and this matter is always in his mind.

Whether this could happen depended on conditions and cooperation from all concerned sides to ensure there would be no more violence, Abhisit said.

Asked if he thought the situation would be stable enough by the middle of 2011 to convince him to dissolve the House of Representatives and call a new general election, he said it depended on how the concerned sections responded to his standpoint.
