Moderate quake hits off Vanuatu

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter's scale jolted the sea region off Vanuatu at 1200 GMT on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 80.6 km, was initially determined to be at 13.67 degrees south latitude and 166.48 degrees east longitude. It was 219 km north northwest of Santo, Vanuatu.

The quake was the aftershock of a much stronger 6.4-magnitude one occurring in the same area at 0604 GMT on Friday.
