Singapore curbs problem gambling with campaign during world cup

With the World Cup season kicking off, Singapore tries to curb problem gaming by raising awareness that soccer gambling can become a problem if a person lacks self-discipline.

According to local TV broadcaster Channel NewsAsia on Friday, Singapore's National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) kicked off the World Cup "No Penalty Campaign" to emphasize this message.

Speaking at the launch, NCPG chairman, Lim Hock San, noted that the World Cup was an important highlight for avid football fans, and soccer betting will heighten during this period.

Highlighting some warning signs, he said that chasing losses and borrowing money to gamble, spending more time than expected, and becoming pre-occupied with gambling while letting bills go unpaid, may be indicative that people may have exceeded their limits.

He added that while football fans can enjoy themselves during the World Cup season, it's important especially for younger adults to control the amounts they wager when gambling.

To spread this message, there will be advertisements in print and broadcast media and the mobile phone platforms. They will send out reminders in the form of a yellow or red card which will appear on soccer-related websites to remind football fans to bet responsibly.
