EU, Russia vow greater cooperation in fighting organized crime

The European Union (EU) and Russia agreed on Wednesday to strengthen their cooperation in the fight against organized crime, and reiterated their determination to reach an operational agreement between Europe and Russia as soon as possible, which will ensure the adequate level of protection of citizens' personal data.

According to a report published on the EU's website, they also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism, especially with regard to processes of radicalization, recruitment, financing and the protection of critical infrastructures.

These are some of the main points being tackled Wednesday at the 12th meeting of the EU-Russia Permanent Partnership Council on Freedom, Security and Justice, which is taking place in Kazan, Russia.

The meeting was attended by the Spanish Minister of Home Affairs, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, and Minister of Justice, Francisco Caamano, as the heads of the rotating presidency of the EU, along with the Russian Minister of Home Affairs, Rashid Gumarovick Nurgaliyev, and the Minister of Justice, Alexander Vladimirovich Konovalov, among others.

They all highlighted the importance of jointly dealing with the fight against drug trafficking, especially originating in Afghanistan, which they consider to be a "serious threat to international peace and security."
