The Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec) has started Wednesday the canvassing of votes cast by overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

The canvassing started shortly before noon with the opening of the ballot box from Laos, which is part of the overseas absentee voting (OAV) scheme.

Comelec officials opened the ballot box containing the certificate of canvass (COC), statement of votes (SOV) and election returns (ERS) from Vientiane.

The elections in Laos were conducted manually. Under the OAV, the only places where the poll body conducted the automated polls were in Singapore and China's Hong Kong SAR.

Comelec officials also opened the ballot boxes from Guam, Brunei Darussalam, Papua New Guinea, Czech Republic, Thailand, the Netherlands and Holland.

The poll body has convened Monday as the National Board of Canvassers for the senatorial candidates and party-list groups.
