Philippine mayoralty candidate abducted in central province

A mayoralty candidate in central Philippines was abducted by 4 unidentified armed persons on Sunday night, the military said Monday.

Generoso Bolina, spokesman of the military's Southern Luzon Command, identified the victim as Edwin Maravilla, the incumbent vice mayor of San Teodoro in Oriental Mindoro province, who is running for the city mayor.

Bolina said the victim was experiencing high blood pressure and decided to go to Calapan for medical checkup.

The victim was blocked by the perpetrators wearing helmet and black jacket on board two motorcycles and armed with pistols while on board his Mitsubishi Lancer heading for Oriental Mindoro province.

"They tied the vice mayor's hands and brought him to remote areas on board a motorcycle," said Bolina.

Troops immediately responded to the scene of incident said the victim's bodyguard Ramon Belano, was tied in both hands but allowed to go, while his driver was released later.

He said military forces and police of the municipality of San Teodoro Oriental Mindoro immediately conducted joint pursuit operation.

The motive of the abduction is still under investigation.
