Indonesia saw its unemployment rate at 7.14 percent as of February this year (equivalent to 8.59 million people), slightly down from 7.87 percent and 8.14 percent in August and February last year respectively, an Indonesian senior official said in Jakarta on Monday.

Rusman Heriawan, the chairman of Indonesian Statistic Bureau Center (BPS) said that unemployed people as of February 2010 reduced by 370,000 people from August last year and 670,000 from last February.

"It showed that the growth in the first quarter this year significantly contributed to efforts to provide more job opening," Rusman said.

According to Rusman, a factor that reduced the unemployment rate was the job opening for civil servants in state institutions during that period.

"It has recruited at least 280,000 fresh graduate people," Rusman was quoted by the as saying.

Rusman also added that the workforce number in Indonesia as of February this year stood at 116 million people, or 2.17 million more than 113.83 million people in August last year.
