Moderate quake jolts near Tonga

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake jolted off the Kingdom of Tonga at 3:46 a.m. local time (1446 GMT Saturday), the U.S. Geological Survey reported Saturday.

The epicenter of the quake, at a depth of 33 km, was identified at 18.3 south latitude and 174.3 west longitude, 323 km from Nuku' alofa, capital of Tonga, and only 50 km from Tonga's Neiafu island, it said.

There is no report of damage or casualty as yet.

Tanga is a country in the southwest Pacific Ocean, comprising about more than 100 islands, 36 of which are inhabited.
