Unknown armed men opened fire on a local official in Khost province, in eastern Afghanistan, on Sunday, injuring two persons, provincial police chief Mubariz Zadran said.

"Unidentified armed men sprayed bullets on the car of Qamar Ali, the secretary of Governor House, wounding two of his friends," Mubariz told Xinhua.

Qamar Ali escaped unhurt, he said.

The incident occurred Sunday morning outside provincial capital Khost city when he was going to his office, the police chief said.

He blamed the attack on "the enemies of peace," a term used against Taliban militants but the outfit has yet to make comment.
