The Group of Friends on Myanmar concluded on Thursday a meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York, with a call for the South Asian country to make its planned nationwide election, the first in two decades, "inclusive, participatory and transparent."

"The group stressed the need for elections to be inclusive, participatory and transparent in order to advance the prospects of stability, democracy and development for all the people of Myanmar, " UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon told reporters after the meeting.

The United Nations is a member of the "Group of Friends on Myanmar," which also includes the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

"We encourage all parties to work in the national interest. The government must create conditions that give all stakeholders the opportunity to participate freely in elections," Ban said.

"This includes the release of all political prisoners -- including Daw Aung Sann Suu Kyi -- and respect for fundamental freedoms," the secretary-general said.

Noting that the meeting followed the recent announcement by the Myanmar authorities of electoral laws, Ban expressed concern that the laws and "the overall electoral environment so far do not fully measure up to what is needed for an inclusive political process."

"I have taken note of the continued engagement between the government and key parties to the national reconciliation process, including the ethnic ceasefire groups and several meetings with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," he said.

"Despite these efforts it is disappointing that we have not seen the progress that we had expected," the secretary-general added.
