United Nations top envoy to Afghanistan Staffan de Mistura held meeting with the delegation of Gulbudin Hekmatyar-led armed opposition Islamic party, Hizb-e- Islami on Thursday, said a statement of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) here.

"The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, met today with the visiting Hezb- e-Islami delegation, in accordance with UNAMA's renewed mandate and in consultation with President Hamid Karzai," the statement added.

The Special Representative listened to their points and indicated that their visit in Kabul and the ongoing discussions with Afghan authorities further underscored the importance of Afghan-led dialogue in order to bring stability to this country, the statement asserted.

It also stressed that the United Nations, as per its traditional role and expertise, will always be available to assist Afghans in order to find proper avenues for pursuing constructive political dialogue. However, it did not give more details.

The militant delegation has already held meeting with President Hamid Karzai and presented its peace plan to the Afghan government.

UN former envoy to Afghanistan Kai Eide held meeting with Taliban militants in the past.
