Thai IPU to discuss parliament's role over political reconciliation

All members and associate members have confirmed to attend the 122 Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly and Related Meetings which will open here on Saturday, secretary general of the group said Wednesday.

None of the members canceled its trip to Bangkok, Andres B. Johnsson told a press conference on Wednesday afternoon amid fear of the ongoing anti-government demonstration.

The red-shirted protesters led by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship or UDD has staged a mass rally since March 14 and its leader has announced to hold a biggest-ever demonstration this Saturday.

"Everything has been well prepared and if the "red-shirts" come, we will invite them for a cup of coffee," Chai Chidchob, President of Thailand's National Assembly said in an interview with Xinhua.

Yan Junqi, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, will represent China at the assembly.

Also to be present at the meeting are Supachai Ponitchpakdi, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Developmentand and Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The assembly will look at how parliament is situated at the heart of political reconciliation and good governance. Representatives from over 150 members and 8 associate members will discuss the fight against organized crime, particular drug trafficking, illegal arms sales, human trafficking and cross- border terrorism, according to a press release by the secretaries.

The Geneva-based IPU was established in 1889 and is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.
