Death toll reaches 31 in bus accident in west Nepal

The death toll in the bus accident that took place in west Nepal Thursday morning has reached 31.

The bus skidded off the road and fell some 150 meters down into the Karnali River in Dailekh district, some 360 km west of capital Kathmandu.

The bus (Na 3 Kha 5868) heading for Surkhet, some 375 km west of Kathmandu, from Kalikot, some 400 km west of Kathamandu, veered off the road and fell some 150 meters down the road into Karnali River in Pipalbot village.

According to the police, so far only 12 have been identified and a dozen injured passengers were rescued and airlifted to Surkhet for treatment. However, the condition of 10 is believed to be critical.

The police said that 33 boarded the bus from station but approximately 60 people were in the bus as the accident occurred, adding that eight passengers survived by jumping from the bus.

Teams of Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Red Cross and locals have been carrying out rescue work at the accident site after the driver, who was injured in the accident too, called police by phone.

A helicopter has also been sent from Surkhet for the rescue of injured passengers.

The police didn't mention the cause of the accident, but locals said the bus was jam-packed with passengers on the roof.
