Akitaka Saiki, Japan's chief negotiator to the six-party talks on denuclearization of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is due in Seoul Friday to meet his South Korean counterpart Wi Sung-lac, Yonhap News Agency reported Monday.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the planned visit by Saiki, but did not give further details.

The visit comes when expectation runs high that Pyongyang is likely to return to the six-party talks soon following a flurry of diplomatic efforts.

Pyongyang unilaterally quit the six-party talks last April in protest against UN sanctions provoked by its second nuclear test.

The six-party talks involves China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the United States, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Russia and Japan.
