Robert Gates pays surprise visit to Afghanistan

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates paid a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Monday, a reliable source told Xinhua but refused to be identified.

During his stay in Afghanistan, the Pentagon chief, according to the source, would call on President Hamid Karzai and meet with the commander of NATO-led troops General Stanley McChrystal to exchange views on the situation in the war-torn country.
