Overall 78 percent of respondents said Ozawa should resign from his post, up 4 percentage points from the previous survey and of DPJ-specific supporters, 63 percent said he should resign as DPJ secretary general.

Of all respondents, 68 percent said he should also resign as a lower house member, the newspaper reported.

In a separate poll conducted by the Kyodo News agency on Saturday and Sunday the approval rating for the ruling cabinet plunged 5.1 percent from February's poll to 36.3 percent, marking the lowest rating since the DPJ cabinet took office last September.

According to Kyodo the disapproval rating stood at 48.9 percent, a rise of 3.8 percentage points from last month's poll.

The poll revealed that 58.6 percent of respondents said they do not believe it would be desirable for the ruling DPJ to control the House of Councillors on its own in addition to holding a majority in the House of Representatives.

Regarding Ozawa's alleged funding improprieties, 74.8 percent of respondents polled by Kyodo said they think he should resign from the party's No. 2 post, up 2.1 percentage points from the previous poll.

Both polls reflect an increasing mistrust of the ruling DPJ bloc and the need for increased accountability over the political funds scandals that have also involved the Prime Minister. The two polls, the figures of which are comparable, reveal that sentiment, even from the DPJ's own supporters, is waning ahead of the crucial forthcoming upper house elections.
