An earthquake of 6.2 on the Richter scale on Sunday hit northwestern parts of Pakistan, according to local press reports.

The private Dawn TV quoted the Pakistan Meteorological Department as saying that the quake struck Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), and other parts of the tribal area, including Swat, Nowshera and Malakand.

Tremors were also felt in the federal capital Islamabad and surrounding areas.

Reports suggest that the epicenter of the earthquake was the Afghan Hindukush.
