Bangladesh's jail authorities hanged to death five former army officers on Thursday early morning for the assassination of the country's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with his family members in 1975.

Those hanged one after another since one-minute past midnight are Lt Col (retd) Syed Faruque Rahman, Lt Col (retd) Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, Lt Col (retd) Muhiuddin Ahmed, Maj (retd) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed and Maj (retd) Bazlul Huda.

Civil surgeon Mofizur Rahman present at the gallows confirmed the deaths.

A trial court on Nov. 8, 1998 sentenced a total of 15 former junior army officers who were involved in the killing case of Mujibur Rahman to death.

The High Court upheld the punishment of 12, acquitting three, in January 2001.

The Supreme Court on Nov. 19 last year upheld the High Court verdict to sentence 12 to death out of who one died years ago while 6 others remain fugitive.

Earlier, President Zillur Rahman outright rejected the mercy petitions of the convicts and Supreme Court also rejected the review petitions of them paving the way for the execution.

The ex-army officers killed most members of Sheikh Mujib's family and overthrew his three and a half-year old rule on Aug. 15, 1975.

Sheikh Mujib's two daughters -- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana survived the massacre as they were in Germany on a visit.

Bangladesh was placed under military and quasi-military rule for nearly 15 years with the assassination of Sheikh Mujib.

Fool-proof security measures were taken in and around the Dhaka Central Jail and all other 66 jails of the country soon after the Supreme Court verdict rejecting the review petitions of the 5 convicts.
