Three children were killed on Wednesday in a bomb blast in northwest Pakistan.

Amjad Ali, a resident from Upper Dir, told Xinhua through phone that the bomb was planted near the house of a local tribal elder Malak Khanzada in Nanger Khani area of Upper Dir district, North West Frontier Province (NWFP), killing his three minors and damaged his house partially.

The reason behind the bombing could not be ascertained and police officials have cordoned off the area. The blast area is close to the main district administration town of Upper Dir.

Pakistani police officers blame Taliban militants for such attacks in the country's restive northwest.

Both Lower and Upper Dir districts of NWFP remained tense because they are close to Swat, once a base of Taliban. The locals have formed an armed lashkar (group) to combat militants in the area and Pakistan army launched a full-scale military offensive in Swat and some areas of Dir against militants last year. The region has been cleared of militants so far but still some areas face unrest.
