India's paramilitary border guards claimed to have foiled two infiltration bids by suspected militants from across the border early Wednesday morning in India-controlled Kashmir's Akhnoor region.

"In the first infiltration bid, five militants sneaked a few kilometers into Indian territory from across the border. As soon as the Border Security Force troops, patrolling along the Indo-Pakistan border in Akhnoor, tried to stop them, the militants opened fire. The Border Security Force (BSF) troopers retaliated and in the ensuing gun battle for nearly an hour, the militants fled back," a senior BSF official said.

The second infiltration bid by the same militants was foiled a couple of hours later by BSF troopers, the official said, claiming that this was the seventh infiltration bid by militants from across the border in the region this month.
