One killed in Sri Lanka election violence

A person was killed and eight others injured on Tuesday in a clash in southern Sri Lanka after a rally for the forthcoming presidential election, said the police.

The police said unknown gunmen fired at a bus carrying supporters of the main opposition United National Party at Hungamain the deep Southern Province area of Tangalle.

The shooting happened at around 1:30 pm local time (0800 GMT) when the opposition supporters returned from a rally.

The gunmen who arrived on a motorcycle had fled the scene.

The island's sixth presidential election will be held on Jan. 26 with the two main candidates being incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, who is the common candidate of opposition parties.
