At least seven people were killed and two others seriously injured when the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off a bridge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Tuesday, a senior police official said.

"Seven were killed on the spot while two, seriously injured, have been admitted to a local hospital in the road mishap, which took place when the driver of the speeding vehicle lost its control while negotiating a sharp bend on the bridge. The vehicle was going from the popular hill town of Shimla to a pilgrimage center," the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said.

Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world, with at least 100,000 killed each year, according to official estimates.
