The Afghan National Army (ANA), backed by NATO-led international forces, has eliminated around a dozen fighters and wounding several others in Taliban hotbed Helmand province, south of Afghanistan.

"During a cleanup operation Sunday in Musa Qala district, the joint force encountered armed militants, killing 11 of them and injuring nine others," said a statement issued by the defense ministry Monday.

A large area of the district has been cleaned up from the insurgents, the statement said, adding that six anti-tank mines were detected and defused by troops on Sunday.

"There were no casualty of the soldiers," said the statement.

Taliban militants have so far made no comment.
