Pakistan and Thailand Wednesday ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the transfer of offenders and enforcement of penal sentences, the Foreign Office of Pakistan said.

The agreement was signed between the two governments in December 2007 at Bangkok and aims at strengthening co-operation and assistance in the exchange of prisoners convicted for criminal offenses, the Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said.

The coming into force of the agreement would lead to exchange of convicts for serving their sentences in their respective countries, he said in a statement.

"The agreement is reflective of the close and cooperative nature of relations between Pakistan and Thailand," Basit said.

A ceremony was held in the Ministry of Interior for exchange of the Instruments of Ratification of the MoU on Cooperation in the Transfer of Offenders and Enforcement of Penal Sentences, between the two countries.

With the exchange of the Instruments of Ratification, the agreement between the two countries has entered into force, the spokesman said.
