Moderate quake hits eastern Indonesia

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Maluku province in eastern Indonesia on Thursday morning without immediate report of damages or casualties, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake jolted at 4:37 a.m. Jakarta time (2137 GMT Wednesday)with epicenter at 155 km northwest Saumlaki of the province and the depth at 90 km under sea bed, the agency official Fadly Rahmantold Xinhua by phone.

Indonesia lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone called the "Pacific Ring of Fire," where two continental plates meet that causes frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
