Two parliamentarians from Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayake joined the government on Wednesday.

Both of them are former ministers of the UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe's government between 2002 and 2004.

Fernando and Bandaranayake told reporters they decided to support President Rajapakse at the forthcoming presidential election to be held on Jan. 26, 2010 as their party did not field a candidate.

The UNP now supports former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, the common candidate of the opposition parties at the presidential poll.

National organizer of the UNP S. B. Dissanayake joined Rajapakse's camp two weeks ago.
