Philippine police and military recovered Tuesday night more sophisticated weapons as they continue scouring several areas in the province of Maguindanao for firearms owned by the Ampatuan family.

Lt. Col. Jonathan Ponce, a local military spokesman, said Wednesday that the weapons were unearthed from an empty plot about100 meters away from the old house of former Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., in the village Timbangan at Shariff Aguak town.

Ponce said among the guns recovered include seven M60 rifles; one mini machine gun; four M14 rifles; one AK 47 with one magazine;two Browning automatic rifles; a 60 millimeter mortar; and 273 rounds of ammunition for AK47.

Members of the Ampatuan family - one of the most powerful clans in southern Philippines - are suspected to be behind the November 23 massacre that claimed 57 lives including women and journalists.

Andal Ampatuan Jr., mayor of Datu Unsay town, was arrested and charged with several counts of murder.
