Eleven people were killed in the recent fighting between Philippine government troops and leftist rebels in the southern province of Bukidnon.

Regional military spokesman Major Michelle Anayron said Wednesday nine New Peoples Army guerrillas and two government soldiers were killed in the gunfight that erupted Dec. 12.

Anayron said the 8th Infantry Battalion recovered assorted weapons.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades.
