Opposition common candidate for the forthcoming presidential election in Sri Lanka, former Chief of Defense Staff General Sarath Fonseka said on Sunday that he will quit the post if he can not abolish the executive presidency once he is elected as the executive president.

Addressing a gathering of professionals and intellectuals in Colombo, Fonseka said President Mahinda Rajapaksa's cutouts were set up every 10 meters, but the people will not vote for "cutout" politicians.

"Rajapaksa is going to take the credit of the successful war by himself, but we fought with weapons which were imported by then President Chandrika Kumaratunga. During President Rajapakse's tenure, heavy weapons were not imported. The Rajapaksa government only imported ammunition and the government got 12 artillery pieces free for ammunition purchased. We have to pay for these purchases until 2020," Fonseka said.

The former Army Commander, who led the Sri Lankan Army to defeat Tamil Tiger rebels, said the present management of the Armyhas not ensured the welfare facilities of soldiers. They are still sleeping under trees or in tents. There are no toilet facilities too. That is why the soldiers give up the army and deserters are higher after the war than during the height of the war, he said.

Fonseka earlier assured to abolish the executive presidency within 180 days after he assumes duties.

In Sri Lankan, the directly elected president with a six-year term is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and head of the cabinet. He (she) can appoints the prime minister and dissolve parliament.
