Afghan troops detain Taliban commander

Afghan forces backed by the NATO-led troops detained a Taliban local commander in Gereshk district of the southern Helmand province, a local official said Saturday.

"The troops launched a cleanup operation in Gereshk yesterday and so far a Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Ghafar has been arrested," governor of Gereshk district Abdul Ahad told Xinhua.

Five more insurgents have been killed during the operation, he further said.

Over 50 suspected insurgents, according to officials have been killed since launching a joint major operation in Nawzad district of Helmand province late last week.
