The United States has provided an additional 10 million U.S. dollars worth of food and rehabilitation aid to help tens of thousands of Filipinos rebuild their lives following the devastation of two back-to-back typhoons, Washington's envoy to the Philippines said Thursday.

U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney said the assistance is part of Washington's disaster relief and recovery assistance to the Philippines, bringing total American assistance to 30 million U.S. dollars.

The Philippines is reeling from the destruction of two deadly tropical storms that dumped epic rainfalls to the northern and central Luzon region since Sept. 26. Nearly 1,000 people were killed in the widespread flooding and landslides while nine million people were affected.

The United Nations earlier appealed for 144 million U.S. dollars from international donors to cover their relief operations in the Philippines.
