Some unknown gunmen, riding motorcycle, shot dead a top government official in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province on Saturday, police said.

Hamid Mehmood, Secretary of the Education Board, was shot and injured in, police said.

He died later in hospital, doctors said.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Driver Jan Muhammad, who escaped unhurt in the attack, said that the gunmen fired at the car at Satellite Town when the secretary was heading to office.

Mehmood received two bullets and was shifted to hospital in critical condition. He died in Bolan Medical College Hospital of wounds.

The gunmen fled on motorcycle, police said.

Pakistani security forces, political and government officials are regularly targeted in Balochistan by unidentified gunmen.
