Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said Monday he is resigning from his post in two or three weeks to concentrate on his presidential bid.

The administration party has fielded Teodoro as its standard bearer in next year's presidential elections.

"It's been good working with each and every one of you and I will treasure the experience wherever I may be," Teodoro told the defense department employees in a forum.

Teodoro said he is wrapping up pending jobs at the department in the next two weeks, including those related with the Reconstruction Commission which is tasked to pursue projects in areas devastated by typhoons Ketsana and Parma.

Teodoro didn't say who will succeed him as defense chief, adding he will be discussing this matter with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Presidential Management Staff head Hermogenes Esperon, former Philippine Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales are among those rumored to replace Teodoro.

Teodoro assumed the defense portfolio in August 2007. The Harvard-trained lawyer is a scion of the Cojuangco family, one of the country's powerful dynasties. He practiced as a corporate lawyer for several years, before embarking on a political career. From 1998 to 2007, Teodoro represented the first district of Tarlac province at the Philippine congress.
