Suspected leftist rebels shot dead on Sunday a Filipino intelligence officer and injured two other civilians in the southern Philippines, a military spokesman said on Monday.

The victim, Corporal Orly Pedrigosa of the Philippine military's 10th Infantry Division, was gunned down by three motorcycle-riding armed men while standing along the highway shortly before 2:00 p.m. in Paquibato district, a know rebel infested area in the southern city of Davao, regional military spokesman Major Randolph Cabangbang told Xinhua by phone.

Pedrigosa died on the spot due to fatal wounds he sustained.

"Two other civilian companions of the intelligence officer were injured. They were rushed to a nearby hospital," Cabangbang said.

The military launched a pursuit operation against the perpetrators.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades.

Military estimates placed the NPA strength at more than 5,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country.

Peace talks between the government and the leftists bogged down in 2004 after the United States included the NPA and its parent body as foreign terrorist organizations. The military is aiming to defeat the leftist insurgency problem next year based on the directive of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
