The 10th general assembly of the association of lawyers in member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) opened here on Thursday, drawing participations of more than 300 delegates, Vietnam News Agency reported.

Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet said at the meeting the agenda of the 10th general assembly is important to each of ASEAN member country as well as the ASEAN Community.

Triet said this is the first time the ASEAN Law Association discusses legal issues put forth in the ASEAN Charter which was introduced in late 2007.

The discussion would help member countries understand more about basic legal values of the ASEAN Community and promote legal reforms in each country, said Triet.

Triet held that the conference would bring about solutions to help achieve the goal of reducing development gap within ASEAN through cooperation and mutual assistance. The goal was demonstrated in the ASEAN Charter, said the report.

With the theme of "ASEAN Charter-Taking ASEAN to New Heights", participants at the conference will discuss the implications of the ASEAN Charter on legal education in ASEAN, resolution of present legal issues under the ASEAN Charter, current judicial reforms in ASEAN countries and improvement of enforcement of International Commercial Arbitral Awards in these countries.
