Bushfires are threatening homes in south- east Queensland Wednesday night with horrendous weather conditions fanning multiple outbreaks, Australia's Sky news reports.

The biggest fires have been just to the west of Brisbane, Queensland's capital, with several smaller blazes also causing concern to the north and south of the city.

Flames raced through long grass on two fronts along the western slope of the range and at one stage, there were calls to evacuate some homes.

Water bombing choppers were called in, wind and temperatures eased late Wednesday afternoon.

The situation is now under control but crews will remain on duty throughout the night to dampen down.

The fire started on Wednesday noon and has blackened some 15,000 hectares in southeast Queensland hours later.

One man has died of a suspected heart attack during the peak of the emergency.
