At least 30 passengers were injured in a gruesome train robbery near Jamui in the eastern Indian state of Bihar early Sunday morning, a senior police official said.

"A group of 25 armed dacoits looted a sleeper class coach of the national capital-bound Howarah-Delhi Janata Express near Jamuiin Bihar. Some 30 people have been seriously injured in the incident when being beaten up by the dacoits. The dacoits also slit the throat of a few creating a bloodbath," the official said.

All the injured have been admitted to a local hospital, where the condition of two is said to be serious, the official said.

Valuables amounting to about 500,000 rupees (10,000 U.S. dollars) have been looted, he said, adding that a massive manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits.

"Police teams have been dispatched around the district and we are hopeful to catch them soon," he said.
