The ruling Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) celebrated its 64th founding anniversary on Saturday, calling party members and the DPRK people to devote to building a prosperous and powerful socialistic nation.

It is the strategic target of the WPK to "open the gate of a great prosperous and powerful nation" within years, said an editorial published by the party's official Rodong Sinmun daily.

The article called on the DPRK people to launch revolutionary upsurge in all fields, so as to realize the modernization of the national economy at a high rate by its own force and latest technology.

The editorial said it is top leader Kim Jong Il's "iron will" to reunify the country, calling for striving for national reunification under the principle of "independent reunification."

It added that the DPRK will continue its foreign policies of " independence, peace and friendship."

A fireworks party was given in Pyongyang Friday night for celebrating the Party's founding anniversary.

The WPK was established on Oct. 10, 1945.
